Anxious patients and those who require more extensive work may benefit from the use of conscious sedation to help them over come their anxiety. Treatment with sedation is carried out in our dedicated unit under the care of surgical specialists, experienced dentists and sedationists together with a trained support team.

This may be for a variety of reasons, such as a bad experience at the dentist, their own beliefs about dental treatment, or perhaps the amount of treatment to be carried out. Their anxiety may be so great that it prevents them from going to the dentist.

Conscious intravenous sedation has been developed to allow patients to have their fears and anxieties reduced to such an extent, that they could comfortably allow dental treatment to take place; it has many advantages which include:

  • 1 There is no need to stay in hospital
  • 2 The risks & inconveniences of anaesthetic are eliminated
  • 3 The patient remains conscious
  • 4 The level of anxiety is reduced
  • 5 The drug used is very effective. Most patients do not remember the treatment which has taken place during the sedation.

What is conscious sedation?

While it is not uncommon to have a fear of the dentist, it is important that people do not avoid going to the dentist because of their phobia. Sedation makes patients feel more relaxed and at ease, which enables them to undergo dental treatment with the support of local anaesthetic. Almost any patient who is in need of dental treatment for health or cosmetic reasons but has anxiety or fear about the procedure is likely to benefit from conscious sedation. We have a full range of techniques to adequately support our patient needs.
